What is the penalty for driving without a driving license?

People who have never obtained a driving license and still decide to get behind the wheel should face very serious consequences. In 2021, the upper limit of the fine for not having a driving license was PLN 500. As you can easily guess, such a penalty was not able to deter many irresponsible drivers who got behind the wheel despite having no driving license.

However, such a penalty is a thing of the past – currently, driving without a driving license is treated as an offense and is punishable by a fine. The fine for not having a driving license in 2022 may be up to PLN 5,000. But that’s not the end. A driver fined is also subject to a driving ban – its length is determined by the court.

If there is no other driver in the vehicle next to the unlicensed driver who could drive home, the car will be towed at the driver’s expense. Ultimately, this means that driving without a driving license in 2022 may cost much more than just PLN 5,000.

What is the fine for driving without a driving license of the appropriate category?

Driving a vehicle without the appropriate category of driving license is treated in the same way as driving without any license. Moreover, during court proceedings, the court may decide to revoke a driving license of a different category.

You must also be aware of the fact that you only receive the right to drive a vehicle when you collect your driving license from the transport department. This means that driving a car:

• while taking driving course,
• before the practical exam,
• after passing the exam, but before receiving the document,

is also punishable because, according to the regulations, it is treated as driving without a driving license. 2022 is no exception in this respect.

Driving a car after having your driving license suspended

There is a slightly different penalty for driving without a driving license if, despite keeping your document for 3 months, e.g. for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h, you get into a car during the ban. Then, in the event of an inspection, you must take into account that the penalty will be extended to 6 months. Subsequent violation of the ban may lead to complete loss of qualifications, requiring repeated completion of the course and passing the exam.
